Farm Animal Welfare Committee

The Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) is an expert committee of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales.  It was established on 1 April 2011 following a review of public bodies.

The Committee provides advice to Defra and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales on the welfare of farmed animals, including farmed animals on agricultural land, at market, in transit and at the place of killing.

26 February 2013 - We are pleased to announce that Dr Kate Rawles has been appointed as a new FAWC member.  Kate is Senior Lecturer in Outdoor Studies at the University of Cumbria and a freelance outdoor philosopher, writer and lecturer.

30 January 2013 – A discussion document on UK law relating to animal welfare has been prepared by the Liaison Group of UK Animal Welfare Advisory Bodies.

8 January 2013 – We are pleased to announce that Mr Peter Jinman has been appointed as FAWC Chairman, with effect from 1 January 2013.  He is a veterinary surgeon and is past President of the British Veterinary Association and of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.  A news release has been issued News Release Chairman.

Also joining FAWC are two new members: Dr Andy Butterworth - Senior Lecturer in Clinical Veterinary Science at Bristol Veterinary School; and Mr Richard Jennison - poultry veterinary surgeon working at a mixed veterinary practice in Herefordshire.

16 November 2012 - FAWC today publishes its Opinion on the welfare implications of breeding and breeding technologies in commercial livestock agriculture, accompanied by a Press notice for Opinion on breeding and breeding technologies.

24 October 2012 - FAWC has submitted comments on the UK Governments’ consultations on the implementation of EU Regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing – FAWC response to consultations on the implementation of EU Regulation 10992009

27 September 2012 - FAWC has published its Annual Review 2011-2012 .

28 August 2012 - FAWC Work Plan 2012-2014 v2 published.

11 April 2012 - FAWC has written to Lord Taylor at Defra about Welfare implications of cloning of farm animalsCloning corrigendum 8 May 2012.

15 March 2012 - FAWC today published its Opinion on Contingency Planning for Farm Animal Welfare in Disasters and Emergencies.  It has also issued a Press notice on contingency planning.

20 February 2012 – FAWC today issued a Consultation on the evidence base for farm animal welfare.  Please send any comments to the FAWC Secretariat contact in the enclosed consultation letter.

3 February 2012 - FAWC today issued its view on sustainable intensification.

15 December 2011 - FAWC today launched its Report on Education, Communication and Knowledge Application in Relation to Farm Animal Welfare .
