Farm Animal Welfare Committee

The Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) is an expert committee of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales.  It was established on 1 April 2011 following a review of public bodies.

The Committee provides advice to Defra and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales on the welfare of farmed animals, including farmed animals on agricultural land, at market, in transit and at the place of killing.

Recent advice

7 April 2014 – FAWC has issued a Consultation on CCTV and other monitoring and verification methods in slaughterhouses.   FAWC was asked by UK Governments to review the methods for monitoring live animal handling, stunning and killing processes with regard to farm animal welfare at the slaughterhouse.  Deadline for responses is 16 May 2014.

24 February 2014 - FAWC has published its vision of  An Animal Health and Welfare Stewardship Programme.  This concept was developed following a request from the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England for advice on how such a scheme might be funded under the EU Rural Development Programme.  The Board was grateful for FAWC’s advice but did not feel it could currently pursue the idea due to funding constraints.

24 February 2014 – FAWC has issued a consultation on Farmer well-being and farm animal welfare

14 February 2014 – FAWC has published its Opinion on the welfare of farmed fish.  This is accompanied by a Press Notice – Opinion on the welfare of farmed fish.

31 January 2014 – FAWC has issued a Consultation on farrowing systems for sows and piglets

21 November 2013FAWC Work Plan 2013-2016 published.

1 October 2013 - FAWC has published its Review of the implications for animal welfare of farm assurance schemes.  This seeks to update and build upon FAWC’s 2005 Report on this topic. This is accompanied by a Press notice for the farm assurance review 2013.

25 September 2013 - FAWC has published its Annual Review 2012-2013.

17 September 2013 – FAWC publishes Advice on space and headroom allowances for transport of farm animals.

16 August 2013 – FAWC has written a letter to GB Governments pressing for action on Keel bone fractures in laying hens.

23 July 2013 – FAWC today publishes its Opinion on the welfare of farmed and park deer, accompanied by a Press release on the welfare of farmed and park deer.

 29 November 2012 – FAWC published its landmark Report on Farm Animal Welfare – Health and Disease.

16 November 2012 - FAWC published its Opinion on the welfare implications of breeding and breeding technologies in commercial livestock agriculture.

11 April 2012 - FAWC has written to Lord Taylor at Defra about Welfare implications of cloning of farm animalsCloning corrigendum 8 May 2012.

15 March 2012 - FAWC published its Opinion on Contingency Planning for Farm Animal Welfare in Disasters and Emergencies

3 February 2012 - FAWC issued its view on sustainable intensification.
