Review of Non-native Species Policy: report of the Working Group

Report of the Working Group

The Review Group considered current arrangements for dealing with the introduction, establishment and spread of non-native species, and assessed the main pathways through which non-native species are introduced and spread. The report makes recommendations to improve measures to limit the ecological and economic impact of invasive non-native species in Great Britain.

See also the Government’s Rural White Paper “Our Countryside: The Future – A Fair Deal For Rural England” which identified the need to carry out a fundamental review of the policy on alien and invasive species.

Review of Non-native Species Legislation and Guidance

A review of non-native legislation and guidance was undertaken by Ecoscope Applied Ecologists to inform the ongoing work of the Non-Native Species Policy Review Working Group.

This report reviews and analyses international agreements relevant to the UK which address non-native species. The UK legislative framework concerning non-native species, and the ability of this to meet our international obligations, is assessed. Legislation concerning non-native species in the United States, New Zealand, Germany and Italy is reviewed, and the experience of these other countries is used to inform recommendations for improving the way in which the UK meets the challenge posed by non-native species.
