QUARRY:
a program to assess the effectiveness of shotgun ammunition
against wildfowl and other quarry

APPENDIX G: INJURY CATEGORIES

The injuries to the various regions of the quarry are rationally categorised as

Category

Status

K

killed

F

unable to fly

P

unable to use both legs (pelvic/lumbar injury)

L

unable to use left leg

R

unable to use right leg

I

injury which does not affect retrieving

C

concussion injury

Category K implies categories F, P, L, R and I.
Category C implies K if the quarry can be quickly recovered (i.e. by retriever)
Category C reverts to category I if the quarry is not quickly recovered (i.e. regains consciousness and may evade capture if capable)

The category of injury associated with each quarry region depends on the depth of penetration achieved by any impacting pellets. With increasing range the pellets tend to penetrate less: some quarry regions then revert to less critical categories of injury. This grading of injury with depth is engendered by the quarry datafile.
