QUARRY:
a program to assess the effectiveness of shotgun ammunition
against wildfowl and other quarry

APPENDIX A: Main Menu

Above the Main Menu is the Current Data display, which typically appears so:

and automatically includes the number of pellets calculated using the declared shot density, diameter and mass. The effective muzzle velocity is also automatically displayed by using the shot and velocity information to run the trajectory back to the muzzle. Both the pellet number and effective muzzle velocity are updated whenever the relevant parameters are changed.

Below this is shown the Main Menu.

The main menu options are selected by typing the first letter, shown highlighted. The options are as follows.

Option
Type
Function
Graph
G

The graphical display is the primary output for the program. This first computes the performance using any updated data. Progress is reported at the bottom of the screen, and pressing any key will abort the process.

On completion the results are plotted:

graph
  1. It simultaneously displays three graphs with respect to range: The outcome probabilities for all ranges
  2. The selected range policy curve
  3. The predicted outcome in the field.

The areas under the curves in graph 3 represent the overall outcome: the results are shown within the panel of the graph.

  • The ‘Hit’ value is the number of birds penetrated by at least one pellet, given as a percentage of total shots fired.
  • The ‘Bagged’ value is the number of birds in the ‘take home bag’ given as a percentage of total shots fired.
  • The ‘Bagged/Hit’ value is the number of bagged birds given as a percentage of birds ‘Hit’.

Press any key to return to the main menu.

Table
T

This displays the computational results in tabular form, including the ballistics. The overall outcome information is are not given here: this is only displayed using Graph from the Main Menu.

This process first computes the performance using any updated data. Progress is reported at the bottom of the screen, and pressing any key will abort the process. On completion the results are listed.

Use the arrow, home, end, pgup & pgdn keys to scroll through the data. Pressing H, B or U automatically places the peak Hit rate, Bagging rate or Unretrieved rate centrally on the screen.

Press the escape key (ESC) to return to the Main Menu.

Ballistics
B

Graphically displays pellet velocity and time of flight, as depicted below.

Press any key to return to the main menu.

Quarry
Q

This displays the current physiology information provided by the quarry datafile. Press any key to return to the main menu.

Steps
S

This opens the following control panel:

A number of shots can be fired at each range, e.g. 20 shots at each metre downrange to the default 100m maximum range. The computations will take longer if small range increments and numerous shots are fired at each range. Many shots at each range will give smoother curves, though only a modest number of shots is required to give a reasonable estimate of overall outcome.

Use the arrow keys to select the required parameter and select values. Press enter (enter tag) to accept your selected values, or press escape (ESC) to reject and so return to the current values.

Print
P

The print output can be direct to an ASCII printer (e.g. IBM Proprinter, Epson FX80) or emulator, as commonly featured by Windows GDI printers, or sent to an ASCII datafile to be read by text editors, word processors and spreadsheets. The print output is a one page summary of the input data and results. The file output additionally includes the tabulated results. Both outputs ask for a description for identification and comment. The datafile name extension is "OUT".

Under Windows, screen capture using the 'Alt + Print-Screen' key combination for then pasting into a word-processor etc. is generally more convenient.

Input
I

This allows input of prescribed data from datafiles, similar to that done when starting the program. New data for the Quarry, Load (i.e. cartridge & gun), Accuracy or Field Policy can be loaded. The listed descriptions are in alphabetic order. The file initially highlighted is that file which was previously loaded.

Use the up tag& down tagkeys to select the required file.
Pressing enter (enter tag) will load the data.
Pressing the Del key will delete the file.
Use the escape key (ESC) to quit to the Main Menu.

Output
O

For creating new Load, Accuracy and Policy datafiles. Having entered Q, L, A or P, type the Filename and press enter (enter tag) and Description and press enter (enter tag): a null response to either Filename or Description will cancel the Output. New Quarry datafiles can not be created here, but must be written manually using a text editor (expert users only).

Colour
C

Switches the background colour between black and white, and the foreground colours are also adjusted for improved visibility. A white background is generally preferred when using 'Alt + Print-Screen' to capture to Windows clipboard for then copying to a word-processor etc.

eXit
X

To quit the program and so return to DOS or Windows.

Under Windows use the 'Alt + Tab' key combination if you wish to conveniently swap between Windows applications without quitting from the Quarry program, and use 'Alt + Tab' again to then regain control of Quarry.
