Designation

National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are designated under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads were designated under separate primary legislation - The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act 1988.

National Park Authorities

The National Park Authorities were set up under the Environment Act 1995, which also revised the National Parks' purposes. Circular 12/96 gives guidance on the revised purposes and National Park Authorities.
