National Park Authorities: Funding

Introduction

The English National Park and the Broads Authorities are funded by central government. See the news release for more detailed figures:

The National Park Authorities and the Broads Authority also take advantage, where possible, of Lottery and European grants and take part in collaborative projects.

Following discussion with the National Park Authorities and the Countryside Agency, Defra issues its expectations for the National Parks, identifying key areas of activity for the following financial year(s). These feed into the bidding and allocations process.

Following the Minister's decision to adopt recommendation 46 of the 2002 Review of the English National Park Authorities, the grant is paid 100% direct from Defra. The Parks will not levy their constituent local authorities.

Sustainable Development Fund

The Fund, which operates within the English National Parks and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, aims to develop and test new ways of achieving a more sustainable way of living in these areas of great natural beauty and diversity, whilst enhancing and conserving local culture, wildlife, landscape, land use and communities.

The Fund, which was launched in July 2002, is open to individuals or organisations from the public, private or voluntary sectors from within or outside the National Park. Details of the Fund, including funding criteria, are set out in the prospectus.

To apply, contact the relevant National Park Authority or the Broads Authority via the Association of National Park Authorities website - select a Park and then go to "contact us". More information can be found from the above link.

Natural England monitors the Sustainable Development Fund on behalf of Defra. Natural England predecessor, the Countryside Agency commissioned independent consultants to assess the first 18 months of the fund. This report was launched in October 2004.
