Consultation on 'Halting the Loss of Biodiversity by 2010 – and beyond'

On Monday, 12 December 2005, the European Commission launched a consultation in preparation of an EU Commission Communication ‘Halting the Loss of Biodiversity by 2010 – and beyond’ due next year.

The objective of this consultation is to seek your views on what needs to be done if the EU is to deliver on its commitments:

a) to halt the loss of biodiversity in the EU by 2010 and

b) to contribute towards significantly reducing the rate of biodiversity loss worldwide by 2010

The consultation suggests a number of ‘key challenges’ and supporting ‘key delivery measures’ to 2010 and beyond. It asks to what extent you agree with these, and whether there are any important key challenges or key delivery measures missing. The consultation seeks you opinion on how important you think biodiversity and ecosystem services are for our prosperity, security and quality of life. It also seeks your opinion on the general policy approach proposed. Your responses will be taken into consideration by the Commission in its further development of the Communication.

This is a public consultation, and stakeholders and other interested parties are invited to send their responses directly to the Commission by 6 February 2006 at the latest.

There is however the option to contribute to a more official UK response which will be coordinated by Defra. If you wish to contribute to this response please ensure that your comments are sent no later than 20 January 2006 to:
