The catchment area for VLA Shrewsbury covers the counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, South Cheshire, North Herefordshire, and parts of the West Midlands, Powys, Gwynedd and Clwyd. As a result, specimens are derived from a broad spectrum covering larger farming units as well as smaller hill farms.
The Laboratory offers a full range of diagnostic services, including post mortem examination of farmed animals, to private veterinary practitioners within its area.
In addition, the Laboratory is responsible for all of the VLA's biochemistry and haematology testing which results in samples being received from the whole of England and Wales. Practices are advised to send samples for these services directly to Shrewsbury.

VLA Starcross provides diagnostic services to veterinary practitioners serving the livestock industry throughout the whole of Devon, which is highly agricultural county.
Submissions from veterinary practitioners take the form of live animals or carcases for post mortem examination, or laboratory samples such as milk, blood faeces etc.
The agricultural livestock are made up predominantly of cattle and sheep but samples are also received from pigs and poultry. Starcross also accepts carcases and samples from local zoological collections.

The main catchment area for VLA Sutton Bonington covers Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire but they also receive samples from parts of Yorkshire and Northamptonshire.
The area covers a broad spectrum of agricultural enterprises ranging from large farming units in Nottinghamshire through to the traditional smaller farms in Derbyshire.
The Laboratory offers a full range of diagnostic services in farmed animals to private veterinary practices within its area.
