VLA Penrith

VLA Penrith provides diagnostic services throughout Cumbria which is a highly agricultural county. Submissions are mainly cattle or sheep samples which reflect the nature of farming in the area.

The laboratory offers a full range of diagnostic services in farmed animals to private veterinary practitioners in the county. There is also specialist expertise in fish, bacteriology and histology with the facility being a reference laboratory for fish disease diagnostic techniques and advice.

VLA Preston

The catchment area for VLA Preston is Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and parts of North Yorkshire.

In addition, it also serves veterinary practices and the Manx Department of Agriculture on the Isle of Man.

Although dairy farming predominates throughout the area, the Laboratory receives material from a variety of other livestock enterprises (including beef cattle, hill and lowland sheep and pigs) as well as exotic species.

Preston offers a full range of diagnostic services in farmed animals to private veterinary practitioners throughout its area.

The Laboratory currently specialises in project work relating to the study of food borne pathogens and carries out statutory testing of processed animal protein for specified bacteria.
