The catchment area of Bury St Edmunds extends to Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex and North East London.
The Laboratory receives a broad mix of animal species including a relatively high proportion of pigs and poultry.
The Laboratory offers a full range of diagnostic services in farmed animals to private veterinary surgeons within its catchment.
It is a Defra approved and OIE Reference Laboratory for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM). Testing for the CEM organism is also approved for international trade purposes.

The catchment area of VLA Carmarthen includes all of South Wales. The town of Carmarthen is the home of a major livestock market and the hub of the farming community.
Farming in the area is varied, with dairy and beef (fattening) cattle farming predominating in Pembrokeshire whilst large numbers of small dairy units exist in Carmarthenshire. The uplands of the region are dominated by sheep and suckler beef farming
