Directions
By road
From West (A69) & North West (A696): From A69, turn left onto A1. Take 2nd slip road to roundabout. Take 4th exit to A191. From A696 Woolsington Bypass continue straight over roundabout to Kenton Bar. At next roundabout take 1st exit along Kenton Lane. Continue for 1 mile to next roundabout. Take 3rd exit and continue to next roundabout. Take 1st exit (Salters Road). Continue to staggered junction at Gosforth High Street. Turn right and then immediately left along the A191 to Benton Park Road. On reaching Four Lane Ends roundabout go straight across onto A191. Follow this road, passing Ship Inn on left. The Regional Laboratory entrance is sign-posted on the right after 100 metres.
From North via A1 (A19): From A1 take slip road for A19 (sign-posted Tyne Tunnel). Continue for 6 miles and take slip road for Whitley Bay (A191). At roundabout take 4th exit to Gosforth (A191) and follow this road west. Laboratory is 2nd left turning (approx. 100 m after traffic lights).
From South (A1M) via Tyne Tunnel: After passing Washington Services take right hand fork for Tyne Tunnel A194 (M). At 1st roundabout take 3rd exit joining A184. Follow A184 to roundabout and take 1st exit onto A1. After leaving northern exit of Tyne Tunnel take 1st exit at 1st roundabout to join A19 (A1). Follow on and take slip road marked A191 Whitley Bay and Gosforth (as above).
From South (A1M) via Tyne Bridge: After passing Washington Services take A167 Gateshead South slip road. At roundabout take 3rd exit following directions for Gateshead South. Follow this road to Gateshead flyover leading to the Tyne Bridge. After crossing Tyne Bridge, follow sign marked Other Routes A167 (M). Then follow signs for Morpeth A1 and take 2nd right turning marked Gosforth B1318. Follow B1318 to Blue House roundabout. Take 3rd exit sign-posted Whitley Bay A191. Follow this road to double roundabouts at Haddricksmill Junction and take right hand exit at 1st roundabout and go straight across second roundabout onto Benton Park Road. Follow this road to Four Lane Ends roundabout. Continue straight across onto Whitley Road (A191). Follow this road passing Ship Inn on the left. The Regional Laboratory entrance is sign-posted on the right hand side after a further 100 metres.
By rail/metro
There is an entrance to the Tyneside Metro rail system within the main concourse of Newcastle British Rail main line station. Either a YELLOW LINE metro, destination STJAMES/COAST, or a RED LINE, destination BENTON, will take you to Benton, the nearest Metro Station to the VI Centre (see map insert).
