EPIZONE is an international network of 18 institutions working on animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease, avian influenza, classical swine fever and bluetongue. Over 25 scientists at VLA are involved in the project.

Its aim is to improve research on epizootic diseases, through collaboration, by:

  • Sharing access to resources such as clinical materials and strains, high-containment facilities and specialist equipment.
  • Providing training opportunties for the scientists.
  • Creating expert teams for acute needs.
  • Setting up links with other groups and networks outside the EU.

EPIZONE's organisational structure is based on a virtual institute covering the themes:

  • diagnostics,
  • intervention strategies,
  • surveillance,
  • epidemiology or risk assessment.
