Environmental policy

VLA supports Defra's work on sustainable development and has targets and plans to ensure its everyday business complies with the environmental standard, ISO 14001.

To achieve this we:

• Comply with relevant environmental legislation and industry best practice.

• Consider the impact on the environment when we buy goods and services.

• Efficiently manage our use of energy and water and, where possible, use renewable sources of energy.

• Reuse or recycle waste wherever possible.

• Encourage staff to use environmentally friendly methods of transport to work by promoting cycling, walking and car-sharing, and provide information on public transport.

• Reduce business travel and encourage staff to use environmentally friendly methods of transport.

• Encourage and support biodiversity on the VLA sites.

• Store, handle and dispose of hazardous substances in line with VLA's safety policy, procedures and environmental legislation.

• Provide training and information on sustainable development to VLA staff so they know how they can help the environment at work and at home.

• Monitor technological development and, where possible, update our infrastructure to benefit the environment.

• Monitor and, where possible, improve our environmental management system.
