Environmental policy
VLA supports Defra's work on sustainable development and has targets and plans to ensure its everyday business complies with the environmental standard, ISO 14001.
To achieve this we:
- Comply with relevant environmental legislation and industry best practice.
- Consider the impact on the environment when we buy goods and services.
- Efficiently manage our use of energy and water and, where possible, use renewable sources of energy.
- Reuse or recycle waste wherever possible.
- Encourage staff to use environmentally friendly methods of transport to work by promoting cycling, walking and car-sharing, and provide information on public transport.
- Reduce business travel and encourage staff to use environmentally friendly methods of transport.
- Encourage and support biodiversity on the VLA sites.
- Store, handle and dispose of hazardous substances in line with VLA's safety policy, procedures and environmental legislation.
- Provide training and information on sustainable development to VLA staff so they know how they can help the environment at work and at home.
- Monitor technological development and, where possible, update our infrastructure to benefit the environment.
- Monitor and, where possible, improve our environmental management system.
