A rapid and comprehensive phenotype analysis of bacteria, fungi and mammalian cells.
The Biolog phenotyping technology (540kb pdf) is a novel platform for high-throughput simultaneous screening of bacteria, fungi and mammalian cells for ~2,000 phenotypes.
The phenotypes are monitored in ‘real time’ to follow the kinetics of respiration/metabolism from a few hours to over a week of incubation.

This technology has been used widely and now has an established track record with many publications in the scientific press. A conference was also held in Florence in 2008.
A series of 96 well plates, each containing a unique testable analyte, has been designed for use with prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
For the prokarotic cells (199kb pdf) a total of 20 plates have been designed and cover carbon sources, nitrogen sources, phosphorus sources, sulphur sources, biosynthetic pathway substrates, peptide nitrogen sources and sensitivities to ion concentration, pH and antimicrobials.
Similarly for the eukaryotic cells (1,109kb pdf) a total of 14 plates have been designed and cover carbon sources, nitrogen sources and sensitivities to ion concentration, hormones, cytokines, growth factors, metabolic effectors and anti-cancer agents.
The Biolog technology access initiative was launched at a seminar day on 12 November 2008 at VLA Weybridge.
