Animal welfare

We collect information on animal welfare from the scanning (passive) disease surveillance carried out for the Food and Farming Group (FFG) of Defra.

This information enables us to provide expert epidemiological consultancy and specialist support to Animal Health in enforcing animal welfare legislation and disseminating information to the livestock industry. 

As a result of this work we deliver:

  • a quarterly summary of all welfare surveillance activity to FFG.
  • 'Welfare Alerts' produced on an occasional, but immediate basis, if issues of concern arise between  the quarterly summaries.
  • reports to FFG of welfare investigations. 
  • specialist support for prosecutions brought by Animal Health under animal health legislation.
  • publication of data to the scientific community and the industry through presentation at conferences and meetings, publications in peer review journals and the farming press.
  • specialist epidemiological consultancy.
