Our diagnostic work supports Defra's disease surveillance. We use a wide range of diagnostic methods. These range from mycoplasma culture and serological identification to PCR, 16S rDNA sequencing and the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) method.

Some of the more unusual identifications in 2006 included: M. canadense; M. dispar; M. wenyonii; and Ureaplasma diversum from cattle; M. imitans from a turkey; M. phocicerebrale from grey seals and an unusual organism similar to M. canadense from a porpoise.

Some of the more unusual identifications in 2005 include: M. sturni from a partridge; M. phocicerebrale from grey seals and porpoises; M. canis from cattle; M. pullorum from a buzzard and a mycoplasma which is closely related to M. gallisepticum from a penguin.
