VLA is a network of sixteen Regional Laboratories including one in Scotland, two in Wales and a central facility in Weybridge, Surrey. There are also two Surveillance Centres operated as sub- contracts with the Liverpool Veterinary School and the Royal Veterinary College.

VLA is internationally recognised as a centre of scientific excellence.

It provides a wide range of applied research and consultancy on diseases of livestock, diagnosis of diseases of statutory and public health importance and surveillance of new and emerging diseases throughout the UK.

VLA acts as an International Reference Laboratory for a wide range of infectious and non-infectious diseases in farm animals.
