Rooker Prize 2009

Dr Simon Carpenter, from the Institute for Animal Health (IAH), was presented with the Rooker Prize at the VLA international conference held at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The Rooker Prize is a newly established international annual prize for individuals who have made a significant contribution to livestock animal health by way of research into the understanding of animal diseases and/or their prevention or treatment. 

The prize will alternate annually between contributions made by an individual of 35 years of age or younger and a lifetime achievement award.  The award is open to all and applicants may self-nominate or be nominated. 2009's award was for those up to 35 years of age. 

The winner is chosen by an international selection committee and is expected to give a lecture on their work at the VLA international conference.

Biography of Lord Rooker

Lord Rooker, is a Life Peer in the House of Lords and a former Member of Parliament (MP).  He has been Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) and more recently was Minister of State and Government for the Department for Environment, Foods and Rural Affairs (Defra) from 2006 to 2008.

Often described as a 'straight talking Brummie', Lord Rooker earned great respect in the farming community, while he was in government, for his no-nonsense attitude on subjects like bovine TB.
