Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL)

What is enzootic bovine leukosis?

Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is a viral infection of cattle. It is often difficult to detect signs of infection. Antibodies are produced and usually remain in the blood for life. The white blood cell counts of infected animals can be constantly high and cattle may develop tumours.

The disease can be transmitted from mother to calf at, or around, birth or within a herd by direct contact. There is currently no effective treatment or vaccine available. Control relies upon identification, culling and the implementation of suitable husbandry methods.

VLA's work on EBL includes:

  • detecting, monitoring and control of EBL both nationally and within the European Union,
  • developing EBL control and eradication strategies both nationally and within the European Union.
