- Between 1990 and 2007 electricity consumption rose by 24 per cent, and fossil fuel used in electricity generation rose by 12 per cent, though it had fallen in the early 1990s.
- Associated carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from electricity generators all fell between 1990 and 1999, by 27 per cent, 60 per cent and 72 per cent respectively. However, CO2 and NOx have both increased since then, reflecting an increase in the use of fossil fuels.
