- The public sector generates about 16 per cent of UK Gross Value Added (monetary output), employs a quarter of workers, and produces 5 per cent of UK carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
- Public sector GVA rose by 38 per cent between 1990 and 2007. CO2 emissions from the sector’s energy use and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, fell by 29 per cent and 44 per cent respectively.
