11. Service sector

- The service sector is the largest and fastest growing UK sector. It employs over half of the workforce and generates just under half of Gross Value Added (monetary output).
- Service sector GVA increased rapidly in the 1990s and in 2007 was 103 per cent higher than in 1990. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the sector’s energy use increased by 4 per cent between 1990 and 2007. However, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) reduced steadily over the period and by 2007 were 43 per cent less than in 1990. (Note that the public sector is not included here. Figures for the public sector are shown overleaf.)
