- In 2000, 29 per cent of males aged 16 and over smoked regularly in the UK, the fifth lowest of the 9 countries selected. The highest percentage was in Netherlands where 36 per cent smoked regularly, and the lowest percentage was in Sweden where this figure was 18 per cent.
- The UK had the fourth highest percentage of female smokers of the 9 countries with 25 per cent being smokers. The highest rate was in Netherlands and the lowest in Canada - at 29 per cent and 16 per cent respectively.
