(a) Life expectancy at birth, 1985-1990 and 2000-2005
Data up to 2004-6 for Great Britain are presented in the national indicator

Note: These data are for all persons, and differ from UK national data which are split between men and women. They also show average life expectancy over a five year period rather than single year measurements.
- In 1985-1990 life expectancy at birth for UK residents was 75 years, the fourth lowest of the 13 selected countries. This increased to 78.3 years in 2000-5, the joint third lowest. During this period life expectancy increased in 7 other of the compared countries by 3 per cent or more.
- Data up to 2004-6 for Great Britain are presented in the national indicator
(b) Infant deaths per 1,000 live births, 1990 and 2006

UK and selected countries

- Infant mortality rates declined in all 13 countries between 1990 and 2006. In the UK there was a decline from 8 to 5 deaths per 1000 live births.
- Between 2000 (not shown) and 2006 infant mortality in the UK declined from 6 to 5 deaths per 1,000 live births. Between 2000 and 2006 seven other countries experienced a decrease in infant mortality rate, while there was little or no change for 5 of the selected countries.
- In 2006 there were 5 deaths per 1,000 live births in the UK, the second joint highest of the compared countries behind the United States of America.
