  • Comparisons between countries of crime figures should be treated with considerable caution.
  • Between 2000 and 2005  there was a fall in the number of car theft and assault in the UK.  During this period the UK, France and Denmark experienced increases in the number of burglaries.  Of all the six compared countries, only Sweden had seen a reduction in all three crimes between 2000 and 2005.
  • In 2000 there were 2.4 car thefts per 100 inhabitants in the UK.  This figure fell to 2.2 thefts per 100 inhabitants in 2005, but was the highest of the six compared countries.
  • Burglaries per 100 inhabitants in the UK increased from 3.4 in 2000 to 4.2 in 2005. This was the largest increase of the six countries, resulting in the highest numbers of burglaries per 100 inhabitants of the compared countries.

  • Between 2000 and 2005 there was a decrease in the number of assaults and threats in the UK, falling from 12.4 in 2000 to 7.4 per 100 inhabitants in 2005. The 7.4 figure was the second highest of the compared countries.
