Emissions of air pollutants

Data up to 2006 for the UK are presented in the national indicator

(a) Kg of nitrogen oxides (NO2) emitted per capita, 1990 and 2005

  • Between 1990 and 2005 UK per capita of emissions of NO2 decreased by 48 per cent. There were decreases in eleven other countries (including Germany, France and Italy) and an increase in Australia. 
  • In 2005 the UK emitted 27 Kg of NO2 per person, the 8th lowest of the 13 countries.  The lowest (15 Kg per person) was in Japan.

(b) Kg of sulphur dioxide (SO2) emitted per capita, 1990 and 2005

  • Between 1990 and 2005 UK per capita of emissions of SO2 decreased by 82 per cent. This was the third largest decrease after Denmark and Germany.
  • In 2005 the UK emitted 11.7 Kg of SO2 per person, the 9th lowest of the 13 countries.  The lowest (3.8 Kg per person) was in the Netherlands.

(c) Kg of carbon monoxide (CO) emitted per capita, 1990 and 2005

This measure is not included in the national indicator

  • Between 1990 and 2005 per capita of emissions of CO declined in all the 13 selected countries. In the UK per capita of emissions of CO decreased by 72 per cent, this was the largest decrease of all the 13 countries.
  • In 2005 the UK emitted 40 Kg of CO per person, the third lowest of the 13 countries. The lowest (23 Kg per person) was in Japan.

d) Kg of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted per capita, 1990 and 2005

This measure is not included in the national indicators

Kg of volatile organic componds (VOC) emitted per capita, 1990 and 2000

  • Between 1990 and 2005 per capita of emissions of VOC declined in all the 13 selected countries. In the UK per capita emissions of VOC decreased by 61 per cent, this was the fourth largest decrease. The largest decrease (68 per cent) was in Belgium.
  • In 2005, the UK emitted 16 Kg of VOC per person, the 5th lowest of the 13 countries.
