*Area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means.

  • The percentage of surface area protected in the UK, increased from 11.9 in 1990 to 13.2 in 2005 - this was the eighth largest increase.   The largest was in Italy (not shown) were surface area protected increased from 3.3 in 1990 to 12.5 in 2005. 
  • Between 1999 and 2005, 4 countries showed an increase in the percentage of surface area protected, and the rest (including the UK) saw little or no change. Italy's increase of 6 percentage points was the largest of the 13 countries.
  • In 2005 13 per cent of UK land area was protected. Of the 13 selected countries 7 had a higher proportion of protected areas, and 5 a lower proportion
