UK and selected countries

- Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) is the total mass of material consumed by the economy (it excludes waste from manufacture of imported goods). Between 1993 and 2004 there was a 2 per cent decrease in DMC in the UK. During this period DMC also declined in Germany by 15 per cent. There were increases in DMC in Sweden, Netherlands and Denmark, and little or no change in Italy and Belgium.
- Between 1999 and 2004 there was little or no change in DMC in the UK. During this period DMC declined in five of the eight selected countries and increased in Sweden and Netherlands.
