What Government is doing
The following pages provide information on what the UK Government is doing to embed sustainable development in our policies, in our practice and in our operations. The pages contain information on our priorities, commitments and contributions as well as information on managing our estate sustainably.
Alongside the UK sustainable development strategy, Securing the Future, the UK Shared Framework for Sustainable Development announced the joint priorities and understanding of the four nations in the UK. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own approaches to working towards sustainable development and these pages cover the UK Government only.
The Sustainable Development Programme involves all government departments as well as other key public bodies, such as the Sustainable Development Commission. This section of the website has information on all of these and how they fit together.
In this section:
- The cross-Government Sustainable Development Programme
- Policies by Department - each Government Department's high level contributions to sustainable development.
- Estate management - information on how we manage our land and buildings sustainably.
- Governance:
- Sustainable Development Ministers/Commitees - information on the Cabinet Sub-Committee of Ministers helping to embed sustainable development in central government departments and their agencies. See also: Environmental Audit Committee.
- Working Group and Programme Board - set up in order to bring together officials from across Government to generate action on particular issues, direct the programme and share experience.
