Environmental protection expenditure (EPE) is company spending where the primary aim is to reduce environmental pollution caused during normal operations.

What is the Environmental Protection Survey (PDF) explains the purpose of the survey, why Defra is requesting the data, and defines what is meant by environmental protection expenditure.

Technical guidance note (PDF) should help you to complete the questionnaire. It contains detailed examples of in-house and external operating costs, “End of Pipe” and “Integrated” capital expenditure and also examples of possible cost savings and incomes.
