Our Science

Defra is the government department responsible for sustainable development. To do this, we draw on a wide science base involving research programmes that amount to around £145 million a year.

Over the next ten years, Defra will focus on five key priority areas:

  1. Climate Change and Energy
  2. Natural Resource Protection
  3. Sustainable Consumption and Production
  4. Sustainable Rural Communities
  5. Farming and Food
Emergency Preparedness is also an important area for Defra as a science based department. With the help of the Science Advisory Council we have responsibility for ensuring that Defra's contingency plans are underpinned by robust science. Science is particularly useful in helping to identify potential risks (current and future) and creating innovative technologies that will enable Defra to manage possible emergencies.
