Our science: natural resource protection

Natural resources include air, soil, fresh water, the marine environment and living resources such as biodiversity, forests and fisheries. They also include public access - for example, cultural landscapes and rights of way and man-made heritage.

Science can help by improving our understanding of the impacts of human activity and enable us to take better account of the ecosystem, so that we can minimise damage and enhance our natural resources.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is a new and fast developing area of science, which will ultimately impact on all our lives and on our environment. But did you know that nanotechnology is already used in self-cleaning windows? Or that future research on nanoparticles will include converting pollutants to less harmful chemicals?

Answer your burning questions about nanoscience and nanotechnology with 'Nanoscience and the Environment' (PDF icon format 410 KB), the first in a series of Defra Science Notes.
