Natural Resource Protection

Natural resources include air, soil, fresh water, the marine environment and living resources such as biodiversity, forests and fisheries. They also include public access - for example, cultural landscapes and rights of way and man-made heritage.

Science can help by improving our understanding of the impacts of human activity and enable us to take better account of the ecosystem, so that we can minimise damage and enhance our natural resources.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is a new and fast developing area of science, which will ultimately impact on all our lives and on our environment. But did you know that nanotechnology is already used in self-cleaning windows? Or that future research on nanoparticles will include converting pollutants to less harmful chemicals?

You will be able to answer all your burning questions about nanoscience and nanotechnology with the publication of 'Nanoscience and the Environment' (PDF icon format 410 KB), the first in a pilot series of Defra Science Notes launched today as part of National Science Week (11 - 20 March).

We welcome your views on the value and interest of Defra Science Notes, if you have any comments please send them to the science communication team or call 0207 238 2019.

Further information is available on our Help page about downloading or reading Adobe Acrobat PDF documents.
