Climate Change and Energy

Climate Change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. There is increasing scientific evidence that human actions are changing the global climate through the emission of greenhouse gases.

Science has a crucial role to play in providing necessary evidence to understand, predict and prepare for the changes that are likely to happen, and to devise policies to prevent what is still preventable.

How is Defra tackling Climate Change?

Changes to our climate will affect almost every aspect of how we live, from the type of food we grow and eat, to the wildlife that surrounds us and even where we go holiday.

This note, the second in a series, presents a snapshot of the science and technology Defra fund in order to tackle climate change. Climate change is an important area for Defra - in 2006-07, the Department spent around £25 million on research, from funding the Hadley Centre who analyse the trends in our climate system, to studying the effects of changing temperatures and rainfall on the tourism industry.
