Review of Defra's Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies research programme (TSE Review 2007)

29th January to 1st February 2007, Lensbury Conference Centre, Teddington, London

Defra aims to protect public and animal health from any risk associated with transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in farm animals. Defra funds a TSE research programme to support policy-making and to help plan for the future.

Defra research programmes are reviewed every three to five years as part of Defra's research management and evaluation process. The objectives of TSE Review 2007 were to:

  • assess whether the TSE research funded during the period from January 2003 to December 2006 had met Defra's needs
  • provide recommendations for research needed to inform Defra's policies in the future.

Ongoing and completed research projects were considered in relation to the science needs highlighted in the TSE Science Strategy produced by Defra in 2003.

All comments and recommendations made during the review process are being considered by Defra and will contribute to the future management of the TSE research programme and individual research projects.
