Economics & Statistics
Scientific analysis in Defra is complemented by the work of other analytical specialists across the department, including economists, statisticians, social researchers and Operations Research (OR) specialists. Defra’s statisticians are involved in the collection and publication of statistical information and in using statistical techniques in the analysis of policy. Economic analyses are used in appraising alternative policy options, often in the context of improving economic efficiency, taking into account all of the costs and benefits involved and their distribution (using a sustainable development framework) .
Together with social research, economic analyses are also used in evaluating the impacts of policy in order to improve future policymaking. Defra is moving towards a more integrated use of social research in reporting the application of scientific research results and analysis.
