9 June 2008

The Government invited the Renewable Fuels Agency (RFA) to lead a review of the fast-emerging new evidence of displacement effects of biofuels on land-use and impacts upon greenhouse gas emissions. The study is led by Professor Ed Gallagher, Chairman of the RFA, and former Chief Executive of the Environment Agency.
The Defra Chief Science Adviser (CSA), Bob Watson, has requested that a small group of SAC members and co-opted independent experts assist him with his assessment of the draft report, ahead of advice he will give to the Defra Secretary of State, Hilary Benn in mid-June. Further details, reports and comments on how this advice was used will be available shortly.

SAC held its latest full Council meeting on 4 June 2008 at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. Access to the meeting agenda and papers is available here.

On 3 June 2008, SAC members were provided with a presentation on Kew Gardens’science activities by Professor Steve Hopper (Director of Kew). Members were lated hosted on a tour of the Gardens, and its science facilities by Professor Hopper. Members had an opportunity to meet Senior Science staff and learn more about their science research and activities in the UK and overseas.

10 March 2008 - New Chair of the Science Advisory Council Announced

Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment today (10 March) announced the appointment of Professor Chris Gaskell as the new Chair of the Defra Science Advisory Council (SAC). Professor Gaskell is Principal of the Royal Agriculture College in Cirencester. He takes over as SAC chair from Professor John Beddington who has been appointed as the Government Chief Scientific Adviser. Further details of the appointment are available here
