GEOSS
The Group on Earth Observation (GEO) was established out of a call for international collaboration for Earth observations from the delegates of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. According to the 10-Year Implementation Plan, the vision is to develop a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) that will provide “comprehensive, coordinated and sustained observations of the Earth system, in order to improve monitoring of the state of the Earth, increase understanding of Earth processes, and enhance prediction of the behaviour of the Earth system.”
The UK is continuing its longstanding record of active participation in Earth observations programs and endorses GEOSS. UK involvement in GEOSS comes from government and academic contributions from varied scientific and technical perspectives. These contributions span all of the nine societal benefit areas as well as the five cross cutting themes.
For more information about UK involvement or GEOSS related events hosted in the UK, please contact the EO Team and for information about GEO or GEOSS, see the GEO webpage.
