The Science Advisory Council (SAC) provides Defra with expert, independent and published advice on science policy and strategy. The SAC – chaired by Professor Christopher Gilligan – communicates this advice to Professor Ian Boyd, the Chief Scientific Adviser, and through him, to Ministers.

The Science Advisory Council is a non-departmental public body that has been reconstituted following an independent review.
