Rural White Paper Review
Run in parallel with Lord
Haskins' Rural Delivery Review, the Rural White Paper review was commissioned
to assess progress on the 2000 Rural White Paper, see whether objectives
needed refreshing in the light of wider changes to the Government's agenda,
and look for ways to accelerate delivery. The Review has found some major
successes from the original White Paper and was used to develop the
Government's Rural Strategy.
The review has been carried out by a Defra-led team, reporting to Alun Michael and working closely with the Rural Affairs Forum for England.

Study of rural areas
The Rural Evidence Research Centre, established by Defra and led by Birkbeck College, has produced a study that will play a vital role in informing the delivery of rural policy over the coming years. The report, Social and Economic Change and Diversity in Rural England, presents the findings of an analysis of 2001 Census and other information which shows in detail the changing nature of England's rural social and economic characteristics.
A "typeset" version of the study will be available shortly and will replace the above interim version.
