Medicines

The aim of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate is to protect public health, animal health and the environment, and to promote animal welfare by ensuring the safety, quality and efficacy of all aspects of veterinary medicines in the UK. The Directorate has responsibility for the authorisation and control of veterinary medicines, and the surveillance of suspected adverse reactions and residues of veterinary products.

This applies to medicinal products for all animals.  The additional responsibility held by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate to maintain and promote the continuing availability of authorised products is particularly relevant for horses. This is being progressed within the on-going European review of the medicines legislation (Review 2001).

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate website provides comprehensive information.   Queries can be sent by e-mail to specified work areas detailed in the Contacts section of the site.
