Farm diversification
The Government recognises that farm diversification is a means for farmers to widen and strengthen the economic base of their businesses and contribute to a more diversified rural economy. Setting up a horse-based enterprise such as livery, riding stables, pony trekking might be one option open to diversifying farmers.
Assistance for diversifying farmers has until recently been available under the England Rural Development Programme (ERDP) through the Rural Enterprise Scheme. This scheme is now closed and the ERDP itself closed at the end of 2006. It is being replaced by the Rural Development Programme for England (2007-13).
