What's new since April 2007 update?
- Matthew Taylor Review on Rural Economy and Affordable Housing. The Prime Minister has asked Matthew Taylor, MP for Truro and St Austell, to conduct a review on how land use and planning can better support rural business and deliver affordable housing. - Views sought on new approaches to affordable rural housing. On 21 August, the Housing Corporation requested views on how best to support the delivery of new affordable homes in rural areas by 13 November 2007. - Housing Green Paper: Rural communities to share in £8 billion worth of investment and reforms to tackle housing shortages.Yvette Cooper, Minister for Housing and Planning, has announced the launch of the Government’s Housing Green Paper - Homes for the future: more affordable, more sustainable.
- We announced in June a new feasibility study led by the Housing Corporation to consider the case for a new funding programme to help local organisations overcome local barriers to the provision of affordable housing in rural areas. More details can be found under “Making it Happen”.
- Commission for Rural Communities “Affordable Rural Housing Commission – One Year On” conference took place on the 14th of June. Barry Gardiner, then Minister for Rural Affairs, spoke about the wider rural agenda, and Yvette Cooper, Minister for Housing and Planning, presented progress made since the ARHC reported.
- New work programme launched by the National Housing and Planning Advisory Unit (see “Positive Planning”), first meeting of the Rural Housing Advisory Group (see “Better Finance”), clarification regarding Church Land (see “Supply of Sites”) and new learning opprtunities for rural local authorities through the Rural Excellence programme (see “Making it Happen”).
