POTATO RING ROT REPORT (2003 Outbreak)

Potato ring rot : follow-up to lessons learned review 25 Oct 06

REVISED FINAL REPORT PUBLISHED INTO THE UK'S FIRST POTATO RING ROT OUTBREAK

A revised final Report is available here (pdf). The original version has been updated to take account of developments in the Netherlands, which have revealed an alternative theory about the cause of the outbreak in Wales. A processing facility in the Netherlands has been identified as a common link in supplying seed potatoes to a number of farms where ring rot outbreaks have occured, in the Netherlands as well as those in the UK. Full details are presented in paragraph 54 of the revised Report. Only the text of the Report has been revised, as the Appendices (see App1-6 below) remain the same as in the original version.

The opportunity has also been taken in the revised Report to correct an error in the Executive Summary of the original version. Paragraph 53 of the Report correctly indicated that the results of testing of Provento material held in the Canary Islands were positive, while the Executive Summary reported that the testing results were negative.  26 Apr 05

This updates the report published on this website on 3 March. In particular it includes the outcome of further work undertaken to investigate the source of infection and the possibility that substitution could have occurred (see paragraph 53).

The report was presented to the EC Standing Committee on Plant Health at their meeting on 22 April and it is likely that a number of the Issues Arising at paragraph 54 of the report will be taken forward during a review of the Annexes to the ring rot Directive.

A chronology of the Potato ring rot finding in Wales can be found here
