Potato ring rot finding - current situation

Updated
  • Testing has been completed of the 12 stocks remaining in store at the farm from which the infected Sante potatoes were supplied. The results for 10 stocks were negative. The two positive results were both associated with the Sante stock in which infected potatoes were first detected.
  • Further sampling and testing is planned for the coming weeks, which will focus on the 2004 harvest from the farm which supplied the infected potatoes, together with three other farms which are growing Sante from stocks originating from the Dutch growers who supplied the outbreak farm. 18 Aug 04

  • Following confirmation of ring rot at a packer's premises in Cambridgeshire, from potatoes grown in the West Midlands in 2003, a tracing and testing programme has been initiated.
  • Stocks potentially at risk are being held while this programme is in progress.
  • Sampling will begin tomorrow at the grower's premises, with stocks being tested at the rate of 20x200 tubers.
  • Tracing has revealed that the seed potatoes planted in the West Midlands originated from the Netherlands.
  • This does not automatically mean that these seed potatoes were the cause of infection and all options are being explored.
  • As part of the investigatory process, the PHSI are liaising with the plant health authorities in the Netherlands to trace other relevant stocks that have entered the UK.
