  • Update Summer 2003

Because of the need for extra resource for the continuing and increasing work of surveying sites for the presence of 'Sudden Oak Death' (Phytophthora ramorum), Defra Plant Health is taking on additional help, mainly from other parts of Defra, namely the Central Science Laboratory and the Horticultural Marketing Inspectorate.

The new staff will help over the summer period in looking for symptoms of S.O.D. on trees and shrubs in woodlands and in and around nurseries and garden centres. They have been trained by CSL in the recognition of the disease in the various plants which are known to be hosts of P. ramorum.

It is hoped that the extra resource will allow the PHSI to carry out its other tasks with no reduction in the quality of the service it provides.
