Defra hosted a meeting on 30 November at the Emmanuel Centre in London to update interested organisations on Phytophthora ramorum and the new disease, provisionally named Phytophthora kernovii.

Over 100 people representing a range of commercial horticultural traders, environmental bodies, historic gardens, national plant health representatives etc attended the meeting. After a welcome by Stephen Hunter and an introductory speech by Ben Bradshaw MP, Minister for Nature Conservation and Fisheries, updates were given of the situation in the UK, the USA and the Netherlands. The effect of the disease(s) on historic gardens and commercial nurseries followed, and after lunch there was an update on the science of the diseases and legislation. Opportunity was given for questions after presentations and at the end of the afternoon there was a lively question and answer forum. Many questions related to the hardship fund but there were also questions about research funding, integrated thinking, bio security, effect of fungicides, and specific questions about control measures.
