Downy mildew on impatiens

  • Following the findings of this disease in 2003 and 2004, Defra felt that it was necessary to consider the risks of this disease further, including its economic impact, and carry out a wider consultation of interested parties before deciding whether to drop all official controls.
  • Following these actions, the main industry organisation in this sector, the British Bedding Plant Association commissioned research into control of the disease·
  • A factsheet was prepared and issued in 2004 in association with the HDC to help growers manage the disease.
  • The NFU are working to produce a Good Horticultural Practice guide to help growers avoid or manage this and other diseases.

    Growers are advised to:
  • Ensure that sources of propagating material whether seed or young plants are free of the disease.
  • Adopt strict hygiene measures to prevent disease carry-over.
  • Reduce humidity to discourage disease development.
  • Monitor crops regularly for signs of the disease.

Defra’s position on this disease is that the industry has the tools to manage it through ensuring that seed and seedlings are free from the disease. Defra is not proposing further statutory action for this disease as long as the industry measures are sufficient to prevent its spread.
