Changes to Irrigation and Spraying Controls for Potatoes and Tomatoes

Amended irrigation and spraying controls take effect from 31 March 2008, which have implications for potato and tomato crops grown in the vicinity of specified watercourses.  The main changes are:

  • restrictions introduced: River Avon (Wiltshire/Dorset); Salford Stream; The Cut, Paley Street; The Channel, Bisham; White Brook, Cookham
  • restrictions amended: Trent and Mersey Canal; River Avon

These changes are being introduced following the results of Defra’s 2007 watercourse survey for Ralstonia solanacearum, the bacterium which causes potato brown rot.

Notices introducing these changes are being published in local newspapers in the areas concerned.  Affected growers are being contacted by the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) with information about the implications of new prohibitions and the options available for irrigating and spraying potato and tomato crops in future.

A complete list of watercourses subject to prohibitions is available here.
