  • At the PAW Open Seminar, held on 27 February 2008, one of the most important issues discussed was the agreed UK wildlife crime priorities for 2007/08. These priorities were agreed by the High Level Group of Government and enforcement officials, following discussion of the National Wildlife Crime Unit's strategic assessment of wildlife crime in the UK. Delegates welcomed the opportunity to hear about the steps being taken to target these wildlife crimes and criminals, and to hear how best they can help.
  • Consultation on introducing a full cost recovery charging regime for CITES licences. Defra is seeking your comments on options for introducing a full cost recovery charging regime for processing and issuing Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) licences. CITES licences are issued to allow trade in listed species of wild animals and plants.

  • An updated report on bat crime is now available from the Bat Conservation Trust. The report, Bat Related Crime - report update, covers the period July 2004 to April 2007 and covers incidents notified to BCT as well as target areas and actions needed to reduce bat-related crime. A copy of the report can be downloaded.
  • A new strategic framework for biodiversity conservation within the UK's devolved framework and has been signed by Ministers of all four UK administrations. The framework comprises a shared purpose in tackling the loss and restoration of biodiversity, the guiding principles we will follow to achieve it, our priorities for action in the UK and internationally, and indicators to monitor the key issues on a UK basis.   • The National Wildlife Crime Unit was officially launched in Edinburgh at 'Our Dynamic Earth' on 18 October 2006. The Unit was launched by Barry Gardiner MP, Minister for Biodiversity, Landscape and Rural Affairs. Please note also that the Unit has set up its own website at www.nwcu.police.uk. (18 October 2006)
