- On the 18th June 2009 the National Wildlife Crime Units first formal Annual Report was released. The report outlines the unit’s strategic aims and the challenges it has faced. It also lists a number of successful convictions for wildlife crime and indicates ways in which the units work will progress in the future. A copy of the report (PDF 2 MB) can be downloaded.
- Natural England, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Crown Prosecution Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU facilitates partnership working between the organisations to prevent, detect, investigate and enforce against crime affecting protected species and habitats
- At the PAW Open Seminar, held on 25 February 2009, Defra Minister Huw Irranca-Davies launched the 2009 UK wildlife crime priorities. These priorities were agreed by a high level group of Government and enforcement officials, following discussion of the National Wildlife Crime Unit's strategic assessment of wildlife crime in the UK.
- Consultation on introducing a full cost recovery charging regime for CITES licences. Defra is seeking your comments on options for introducing a full cost recovery charging regime for processing and issuing Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) licences. CITES licences are issued to allow trade in listed species of wild animals and plants.
- An updated report on bat crime is now available from the Bat Conservation Trust. The report, Bat Related Crime - report update, covers the period July 2004 to April 2007 and covers incidents notified to BCT as well as target areas and actions needed to reduce bat-related crime. A copy of the report can be downloaded.
- A new strategic framework for biodiversity conservation within the UK's devolved framework and has been signed by Ministers of all four UK administrations. The framework comprises a shared purpose in tackling the loss and restoration of biodiversity, the guiding principles we will follow to achieve it, our priorities for action in the UK and internationally, and indicators to monitor the key issues on a UK basis.
