Register now to attend the Science Advisory Council's open meeting

The Science Advisory Council, the key independent body advising Defra Scientists and Ministers, is holding an open meeting on Wednesday 14 October 2009, from 9:30 to 16:30 at the Prince Albert Suite, London Zoo. The meeting is free to attend, but pre-registration is essential. This is an excellent opportunity to see how the Council works, and find out more about the big scientific challenges Defra is facing.

Access to current scientific research is very important for Defra to achieve its aims of securing a healthy natural environment, a sustainable, low-carbon economy, a thriving farming sector and a sustainable, healthy and secure food supply. It is crucial that policy is based on the best scientific evidence available, and current scientific research assists Defra with identifying and tackling future challenges and provides evidence to guide decision making.

The Science Advisory Council (SAC) provides independent, forward-looking strategic scientific advice on major cross-cutting issues. It is the key independent body advising Defra scientists and ministers on issues from animal health to food security. The meeting will examine and give updates on:
